Liz Riversdale

Counsellor

“Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. Finding a counsellor who feels ‘right’ for you is a personal process and can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. To help make this easier, I’m happy to chat via email or a quick call to answer your questions and see if my approach aligns with what you’re looking for.

Approach

My approach is eclectic, collaborative, and trauma-informed, rooted in the belief that healing happens when we engage both the mind and the body

By working with both the mind and the body, we talk about change and we experience it. This integrated approach helps to:

  • Regulate your nervous system, moving beyond “just knowing” you’re safe to actually feeling safe.
  • Access deeper insights by listening to the “inner wisdom” your body holds when words aren’t enough.
  • Create sustainable shifts in how you relate to yourself and others, ensuring your healing is embodied.

My Tools & Style
I am skilled with a range of tools and am flexible in my approach, depending on what you need. I draw on diverse models which include:

  • Cognitive & Relational: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Client-Centred Therapy.
  • Somatic & Experiential: Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Mindfulness.
People find me down-to-earth and readily able to relate to them. I provide a safe space for clients to talk in confidence, bringing warmth, expertise and humor to our sessions.

Over the course of our work, you can expect your understanding of yourself and others to significantly increase, making way for new, healthier ways of living and relating to emerge.

Benefits include:

  • improved communication and interpersonal skills
  • greater self-acceptance and self-esteem
  • ability to change self-defeating behaviors/habits
  • connecting with and expressing emotions
  • ability to self-regulate
  • increased confidence and decision-making skills
  • improved problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities
  • greater sense of self and purpose

Background and Experience

I qualified as a counsellor 25 years ago and during this time, I have been privileged to work with a variety of people of all ages and cultures with a broad range of issues. The settings I have worked in include Education, Not for Profit Organisations and EAP services.

I have had a varied career and also worked as a Social Work lecturer for 10 years at Te Wananga O Aotearoa, and a Leadership Coach and facilitator for 12 years.  This has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge that I can draw upon in my counselling practice.
