James Howey

Counselling and Supervision Services Dunedin, and Online

My areas of specialisation include couples counselling, family counselling, mid-life transition work, trauma-informed counselling and working with men.

Originally from Waimate in South Canterbury, I bring over 28 years of clinical experience across a range of counselling and educational settings in both Australia and New Zealand. I hold full membership with NZAC (New Zealand Association of Counsellors).

My Approach

Engaging in counselling is a deeply personal process, and one that unfolds differently for each person. Over many years of practice, I have seen that when we take the time to think carefully and speak openly about what is happening, new perspectives begin to emerge. Counselling can help clarify what may feel confusing, strengthen your capacity to respond, and support you to move forward with greater steadiness.

I work with a clear respect for the individuality of each person’s experience. People are shaped by their histories, relationships, culture, and beliefs, and it is important that these are understood and held with care within the counselling process.

My clinical work is informed by a breadth of established modalities and frameworks, including:

  • Family Therapy
  • Couples Therapy
  • Coaching for Parenting / Step-Parenting challenges
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Solution Focused Therapy
  • Trauma-Informed Counselling
  • Enneagram personality and transformative insight work
  • Lifestage Transition work
  • Mid-life ‘Crisis’ and Reintegration work
  • Counselling with Teenagers
  • Counselling work with Men and Boys
  • Counselling work with Women
  • Therapeutic Group Counselling
  • Loss and Grief Counselling
  • LGBTQI Informed Counselling
  • Counselling with individuals, families and friends affected by suicide
  • Clinical Supervision
  • Supervision of work place Leadership

As an NZAC approved Supervisor, I provide clinical and personal supervision for counsellors, counsellors-in-training, and professionals in leadership and other sectors.

I understand supervision as a disciplined and reflective space where clinical practice can be examined with care and clarity. It supports the ongoing development of professional identity, ethical awareness, and clinical judgement. It is also an important place of support for practitioners who carry significant responsibility in their work with others.

I welcome the opportunity to meet informally, at no charge, to explore your supervision needs.
