Kia ora, I’m Nate, a counsellor based in Blenheim. I know from my own life that getting support can make a huge difference, and I see it as a real privilege to walk alongside people as they find their way through tough seasons.
I work with teens and adults who might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, burnt out, or unsure who they are anymore. This can look like anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship or whānau difficulties, big life changes, or carrying old stories that no longer fit. I have a particular interest in men’s mental health and the pressure to “harden up” or hold everything in, and I enjoy supporting people who are trying to do things differently from how they were raised.
My style is warm, informal, and collaborative. I won’t sit there in silence or tell you what to do, instead, we’ll make sense of what’s going on together at your pace. I draw from narrative and personcentred approaches, and I’m happy to bring in practical tools (like coping strategies, grounding, or communication skills) when that’s useful.
I deeply respect that every person’s story is unique – including culture, whānau, gender, sexuality, neurodiversity, and spirituality. I aim to be inclusive and affirming of all identities, and I’m always open to feedback about what helps you feel safe in the room (or on screen). If you’re Māori or from another culture, I’ll do my best to honour your values and ways of making sense of the world, and I’m open to learning alongside you.
In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know each other and what’s brought you here. There’s no pressure to tell your whole story at once. We’ll talk about what you’d like from counselling – whether that’s having a space to offload, understanding yourself better, or working towards specific changes – and we’ll check in regularly to make sure our work is still feeling useful.
If you’re not sure whether I’m the right fit, you’re welcome to reach out or book an initial session and see how it feels. You don’t have to have the perfect words or a tidy story – we can start exactly where you are.
